Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Probation Officer, under the general direction of the Chief Judge, as a professional representative of the Tribal Court, conducts investigations of backgrounds, assesses, directs, and assists adult defendants and juvenile respondents who have been Court-ordered to complete probation or pre-trial services.

CONTACTS:
Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers/clients, outside vendors/service providers, outside-agency probation and Law Enforcement personnel and attorneys.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position light primarily sitting/lifting a maximum of 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision; frequent sitting, use of smell, manual handling, typing standing and walking; and occasional lifting, carrying, reaching, bending and driving. Working conditions include occasional exposure to extreme weather, wet/humidity, and noise and air quality. Potential hazards include frequent client contact, computer and equipment use and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, infectious exposure and equipment. Personal protection equipment needed to perform functions of position includes latex gloves when performing drug screens and safety equipment when engaging in community service events. PPE provided by employer. May carry a concealed weapon or pepper spray for self-defense.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice or Social Work or Social Services required or five years demonstrated ability in related work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in criminal justice, social or human services required in addition to above stated degree requirements.
Certification/License: Must obtain Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI) Juvenile Probation Certification within 1 year of hire. Must comply with Court Rules of Conduct. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the Anishnabe Culture, values, philosophy, ceremonies, and customs preferred. Knowledge of substance abuse treatment and recovery required. Knowledge of criminal justice system, court processes, and legal terminology required. Knowledge of direct services i.e., medical, social, available in Tribal and local communities preferred. Must be able to make independent judgments and quick decisions. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate clearly in person, in writing, and by telephone and email. Must be able to comprehend a variety of documents, i.e., police reports, lab reports. Must be able to define problems, assess facts, and draw conclusions. Must be able to deal with various personality types. Must be able to work in high stress environment and handle difficult and crisis situations. Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. Must have organizational skills and be able to plan, prioritize and manage work load to meet goals in a timely manner. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
